Babies in TV tower
Babies in TV tower
Major addition to the TV tower in Zizkov district of Prague since it was built is a very unusual art installation by Czech sculptor and artist David Černý. Giant crawling babies 6ft long and made of ebony and look quite bizarre ‘Miminka’ in Czech added to the tower as an art project! A dozen black sculptures of babies crawling up the TV Tower were presented in 1994, installed during Prague’s tenure as European City of Culture in 2000 and became permanent on Zizkov tower since 2001.
The babies were originally supposed to be in TV tower there for a short time, but public liked them so much that it was decided to keep them for at least ten years. Tower is so high that you can even see many prague hotels from top. They were so popular as they helped to change the way many people feel about the TV Tower - a humorous addition to a once-threatening Communist monolith, reclaiming the building for the people of Prague. The idea of combining those ‘computer babies’ with a technical building climbing the tower changes this tower to a little joke.
