Fountain with Sculptures

The fountain at Senovazne square in Prague was made around 1960. At first this group of sculptures - the four musicians and marionette dancer by an Austrian artist of Czech origin Anna Chromy, was exhibited in “A Sound of Bronze” on “Ovocny trh” in front of “Stavovske Divadlo”, and after success in 2002 was permanently installed as a fountain on “senovážné námesti”, a square in the old town, where Mozart was enthusiastically welcomed by the citizens of Prague when he first set foot in this city. The installation of statues - tribute of Anna Chromy to Prague around fountain was inaugurated by the President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus. This group of sculptures is linked to the literary myth of Don Juan and the marionette theatre. The traveling companies of marionette players propagated the legend of Don Juan throughout the centuries in central Europe and especially in Bohemia and still today you can find the large wooden marionettes of the National Marionette Theatre in Prague in a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
