František Palacký Memorial
František Palacký –famous Czech politician and historian of XIX century. He is also called the Father of the Czech Nation due to the role he played in Czech National Revival. His had also protected the rights of the Czechs, the Slovaks, and many other Slavonic peoples, including the people in his native region of Moravia.
Originally František Palacký studied theology. However being a conscientious Czech, at the times of Czech National Revival he decided to become a historian. He stated as chronicler for individual noble families. These chronicles were met with success. Later on he became a historian of the Bohemian estates and held this post until his death.
For a short period of his life Palacky was banned from all of his public activities, except his post as the historian of the Bohemian estates, and he was constantly followed by the Austrian secret police. He was offered, but refused a seat in the Upper House of Parliament in Vienna, and a title. Palacky preferred to stay in Prague working on history of the Czech Lands.
František Palacký Memorial was erected on Palackeho namesti. A swarm of haunted bronze figures (allegories of writer’s imagination) swirling around a stodgy statue of the19-century historian and giant of the Czech National Revival
