Jan Neruda
Jan Neruda
Jan Nepomuk Neruda was famous Czech journalist, poet and writer of XIX century. He is one of the most well-known representatives of Czech Realism and a member of so called “May school”.
Jan Neruda was born in Prague. He studied philosophy and philology; started as a teacher, but eventually became a journalist and writer. The main idea of the works of Neruda is rebirth of Czech patriotism. He participated in central cultural and political struggles of his times, and gained a reputation of critic. Jan Neruda tried to bring new literary trends into the journalism and literature.
After he died, one of the streets in Little Quarter was named after him, Neruda Street.
On the monument which is located on the way to Petrin there is a gentleman who is deep in his thoughts. He wears a long coat and keeps his hands behind his back. Probably there is some critical thought in his mind or he thinks how to bring some of his innovative ideas to life.
