National monument

National monument

National Monument on Vitkov is located behind the statue of Jan Zizka on Vitkov Hill. It is a massive building, which was constructed back in 1930’s. The monument was built in honor of Czech legionary and foundation of the former Czechoslovakia. Vitkov Hill was the perfect place for the monument dislocation. It was the place where the battle of Hussites against Crusaders took place in the XV century, and where more that 15 000 people demonstrated their support to Czech national revival in the second half of the XIX century.
There is a big memorial hall inside the monument. It contains the largest organs in the Czech Republic. During the communism era this monument was used as a mausoleum for the remains of regime leaders.

There plans to reconstruct the National Monument into a modern historical museum which will be housing exhibitions of the Crossroads of Czech Statehood.

Address: U Pamatniku 1900, Praha 3
