Pieta or Commentator statue

A “Pieta” or “Commendatore” sculpture was made by Anna Chromy, an Austrian artist of Czech origin in 1993 and is located in front of the entrance of “Stavovske Divadlo” only 50 meters from the old town hall and its famous clock in Prague. This statue is made of bronze and is 160 cm high. It is made in honor of famous composer Mozart who lived in Prague and had grand opening of beautiful opera “Don Giovanni” in “Stavovske Divadlo” on October 29th, 1787. Anna Chromy is the only artist and sculptor who has cast a famous and complete Mozart opera, the Don Giovanni, in bronze. Her works are based on mythology, music and dance and her religious beliefs. When she was created Pieta or Commentator statue she took the form, covered it with bronze, and took the form out. There are different opinions on the meaning of this strange statue. Some say that it depicts Donna Anna, beloved woman by Don Juan. Others say that its monk woman who lost face after relations with Don Juan. Some say that it’s Madonna, crying over Christ and that it’s copy of original statue is installed in Salzbug in Austria by order of city archiepiscopate.
