In Prague there is always something happening all year round. A year-round calendar of theatre, top opera and ballet together with winning programs of annual events in various spheres offers almost every day some great event in Prague.
Throughout the year Prague, the capital of Czech Republic, hosts a calendar of numerous events. Not counting such big events like Prague Christmas and Easter markets, Prague attracts many other international like the Prague marathon and musical concerts.
Christmas is a big holiday in Prague and it’s a special magic time of the year when the Christmas markets are open. Prague Christmas markets have a long tradition of bringing people together and share the holiday spirit and good mood. Christmas markets are full of lights and colorful decorations, Christmas music and smell of traditional hot wine, sausages and gingerbread.
Easter is also very nice time in Prague. In Prague traditional Easter Markets you can see & buy fine hand crafted goods, various Czech foods and watch presentation of some of the wonderful old traditional customs that make up a classical Czech Easter… sale of traditional items, refreshments, arts and crafts workshops (braiding switches or Easter whips, painting of Easter eggs, making of spring flower
decorations), cultural program, puppet and marionette theater, other events for children, small ZOO with live animals.
The Prague International Marathon or PIM is held every year in May and you can see or even take part in a race in the city of Prague Czech Republic. Since 1995 the Prague marathon became one of the most significant races in the whole world. As media says it is the most international marathon in the world, where two-thirds of runners are from 55 different countries. PIM is also considered the 7th fastest and one of the most beautiful in the world. Its route stars in the Old Town Square (Staromìstské námestí) through the city and along river banks and ends back in the same location. In marathon main international athletes take part, but this race is also open to amateur runners, however the organizers set a six-hour time limit for all runners.
The Prague Spring is International Music Festival and one of the greatest post-war festivals, that is held annually. Every year it’s opening with honoring Bedrich Smetana who is considered as father of Czech music and traditional performance of his orchestral cycle Má Vlast (My Country). Music features opera, chamber music, and symphonies in Prague spring Festival. This festival is open for developing young talent and a
competition between them is held in various instrumental sections every year. Performances are held in concert halls and theatres in Prague.
Other international music festival is Prague Autumn. First time it was held in 1991, 17 years ago. During these years the festival has presented a many soloists and excellent philharmonic orchestras from the Europe and whole world and thus became an important event in the world of classical music.
Since 1991 Prague’s Rudolfinum held series of classical concerts performed by outstanding musicians
in its impressing hall. Every year people leave concert with lasting impressions - and come back again.
One World Film Festival was first held in Prague in 1999, and rapidly became an important voice in film events. Non-profit organization “People in Need” (Czech TV Foundation) created this festival. One World Film Festival promotes documentary filmmaking, people who have limited opportunities to see quality
documentary films can go to this festival and see quality documentaries. Lucerna cinema in Prague
is the main festival centre, but the World Film Festival also can be held in other places of the city.
Days of European Film (Dny Evropskeho filmu) – that is the name of the film festival was held first time in 1994. Visiting this festival audience can know what is new in the European cinematography. The best films made by European countries are presented there. Visitors can see around fifty films of different genres every year. Days of European Film festival is organized by culture institutes and embassies from the countries, and by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the city of Prague.
Prague Writers’ Festival is one of the greatest cultural and notable literary events in Europe. The festival
focuses on young talents and students, mostly from the CharlesUniversity, Prague College of Journalism and Masaryk University.
