Princess Libuse and Premysl statue
Princess Libuse and Premysl statue
The statue of legendary Czechs, founders of the Přemyslid dynasty and Prague – princess Libuše and Přemysl, is situated in Vysehrad. Vysehrad is ancient Castle at heights with a huge park, ruins from the beginnings of Prague and last but not least a Neo-Gothic church and Cemetery. Princess Libuse and Premysl statue is one of four large, sculpted images of couples from Czech legend designed by J. V. Myslbek, the sculptor of the St. Wenceslas monument, in 1848-1922. Statue depicts princess Libuse with her husband Premysl. According to legends she sent a white horse out to find a groom and the horse found a ploughman, Přemysl. Other legend says that Libuše was standing on the top of Vyšehrad hill and said “I see a grand city whose glory touches the stars!”
Libuse ordered her servants to find a wooden hut in the forest with small doorway in order king or poor person must bow entering and look at the threshold. In old Czech threshold is “prah” and it is the origin of the Czech name for Prague, Praha.
