Saint Salvator with Cosmas and Damian

Statue of Saint Salvator with Cosmas and Damian

Statue of Saint Salvator with Cosmas and Damian was designed in 1709 by Jan Oldřich Mayer, and sponsored by the faculty of medicine, University of Prague. Statue represents St. Salvator, with the patron saints of medicine placed on either side are attired in gowns and hold containers of medicines. These three saints are counted as the patron saints of physicians and known for dispensing free medical services to the poor. Saints Cosmas and Damian were twins and early Christian martyrs, born in Cilicia in 3rd century and practiced the art of healing. The martyr twins Cosmas and Damian are invoked in the liturgy of the Mass at the beginning of the Canon of the Mass prior to the Consecration, during the prayer known as the Communicantes. Nowadays statue is missing some ornaments, however recently police scuba drivers found in Vltava River a ceremonial sword, probably more than 200 years old, and a brass object that looks like a small spire, that might be a part of the eternal light from the statue of Saint Salvator with Cosmas and Damian.
