St. Anthony of Padua
Statue of St. Anthony of Padua
Statue of St. Anthony of Padua was designed in 1707 by Jan Oldřich Mayer and sponsored by councilor of the Prague Castle burgraviate, Krištof Mořice Withauer. His statue represents the preacher St. Anthony standing between two vases, holding baby Jesus and a lily. Saint Anthony is also known as Catholic Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Anthony of Lisbon and, as he was born in Lisbon, Portugal. His images and statues are ubiquitous as he is considered as one of the most beloved of saints. He was also proclaimed a Doctor of the Church on January and “Evangelical Doctor” and he is especially invoked for the recovery of things lost. Stories say that when he died, all the bells of the churches rang, the children cried in the streets and angels came to earth to ring the bells for the death of the saint Anthony of Padua.
