St. Jude Thaddeus
Statue of St. Jude Thaddeus
Statue of St. Jude Thaddeus was sculpted in 1708 by Jan Oldřich Mayer and sponsored by František Sezima, the knight Mitrovský from Nemyšle and at Jeřichovice. This sculpture portrays St. Jude holding both the Gospel and the rod with which he was fatally beaten. In the Roman Catholic Church St. Jude Thaddeus is considered as the patron saint of lost causes and desperate cases. His attribute is a rod and he is also often shown in icons with a flame around his head. Stories say that he received the Holy Spirit with the other apostles and a flame around his head appears because he can perform some great miracles for the hopeless. Sometimes he is also shown holding a carpenter’s rule or with a scroll or a book (the Epistle of Jude).
