St. Ludmila and little Wenceslas
The statue of St. Ludmila was created by Matthias Braun around 1730 and erected on the Charles Bridge in 1784 to replace the statue of St. Wenceslas that was damaged by floods in the same year. The statue depicts St. Ludmilla - the grandmother of Czech patron St. Wenceslas and the first Czech Christian martyr. She is teaching little Wenceslas to read Bible pointing at it. In her left hand, St. Ludmila holds the veil which symbolizes her death as with it she was suffocated and on a relief on a pedestal of this statue you can see the murder of St. Wenceslas depicted. The original of this statue of St. Ludmila is placed in the Gorlice at Vysehrad.
