Statue of St. Adalbert

Statue of St. Adalbert in Charles Bridge was designed in 1709 by Michael and Ferdinand Brokoff, and sponsored by the councilor of the Old Town of Prague - Markus Bernard Joanelli. The saint is portrayed standing on a base decorated with angels and the emblem of the donor, with a prelate stick in the hand developing into a sea paddle. St. Adalbert was born around 957 and he became a Benedictine monk, and he was also a friend of the emperor Wenceslas – “the good king”. He was the first bishop of Bohemia is blessing the Czech lands after returning from Rome and was martyred in his efforts, to convert the Baltic Prussians. Thus later he was canonized as Saint Adalbert of Prague, patron of Bohemia, Poland, Hungary, and Prussia. Adalbert.
