Statue of St. Joseph

This statue of Joseph with Jesus was designed in 1854 by Josef Max and sponsored by Josef Bergmann, a tradesman in Prague. It was put in Charles Bridge to replace another statue with the same motif by Jan Brokoff, designed in 1706 that was destroyed by gunfire by anti-Habsburg rioters in 1848. The statue is situated on top of a pseudo-gothic base and depicts Saint Joseph leading a small Christ. St Joseph is known as the husband of Mary, mother of Jesus and although according to Christian tradition he was not the biological father of Jesus. St Joseph is also the patron saint of workers and and protector of the universal Catholic Church. He has several feast days.
