Statue of the Lamenting of Christ
Statue of the Lamenting of Christ was designed in 1858 by Emanuel Max as a commission of the Old Town public authorities. Originally it was a wooden crucifix, which was destroyed in 1496 by a flood and in 1695 a statue depicting the lamenting of Christ by Jan Brokoff was installed here. Later in 1859 it was removed to the Monastery of Gracious Nurses under the Petřín hill and replaced by the current statue. Statue of the Lamenting of Christ depicts Jesus lying in the Virgin Mary’s lap, St. John standing in the center and Mary Magdalene on the right. During the Middle Ages executions were regularly held on this site.
